Fla. Congressman Tim Mahoney Bribes Former Lover

A Florida (House) Bombshell - The Fix

The report from ABC News that Florida Democratic Rep. Tim Mahoney paid a former mistress more than $100,000 to settle a lawsuit she was planning to bring against him badly imperils a seat that was already high on Republicans' target list.

"I just learned today about the serious allegations concerning Congressman Tim Mahoney," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "These charges must be immediately and thoroughly investigated by the House Ethics Committee."

"According to ABC News, Tim Mahoney apparently included our company in a secret legal agreement without the knowledge of our firm," said Bill Fletcher. "Our firm did not agree to any legal settlement."

Rep Tim Mahoney

Tim Mahoney is in a secret legal agreement with Patricia Allen. A secret legal agreement? NO, bribe money or hush money. A Mahoney spokesman said the first-term representative never used campaign funds to pay off Allen.I guess it was okay to pay off Allen as long as it was not campaign money.

The scandal also poses major problems for House Democratic leadership, which is hoping to ride a wave of economic discontent to expand its majority. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said. "These charges must be immediately and thoroughly investigated by the House Ethics Committee." I wonder if this will be in the news for the next three weeks? Will the news media hound this story like the Mark Foley emails to under age pages?

Now how did Ms Allen get involved with the Congressman? Mahoney first met Allen at a campaign stop and later arranged for her to work as a volunteer on the campaign, according to the report. She also appeared in a Mahoney campaign television commercial, criticizing his opponent, Mark Foley. Friends of Allen told ABC she sought to break off the affair when she learned Mahoney was allegedly involved in other extra-marital relationships at the same time.

Well Mark Foley resigned in September after being confronted with lurid computer messages he sent to male teenage pages and Tim Mahoney took his place. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) took the House floor last night to demand an investigation into the Foley matter. But Boehner headed her off, calling on the House to refer the matter to the ethics committee, which the House promptly voted unanimously to do.

Then House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California proposed to the House that its ethics committee investigate and make a preliminary report in 10 days. She demanded to know who knew of the messages, whether Foley had other contacts with pages and when the Republican leadership was notified of Foley's conduct.

I think the Republicans should demand the same with Tim Mahoney. First we should have a preliminary report in 10 days. We should know when the Democrats knew about the cover up bribe. And Congressman Tim Mahoney should resign just like Mark Foley.
