ACORN signs up Mickey Mouse to Vote in Florida

Vote drives defended, despite fake names - St. Petersburg Times

Mickey Mouse tried to register to vote in Florida this summer.

Nationwide, ACORN is a favorite GOP target for allegations of voter registration fraud this year.

This year, 39 members of the House of Representatives have asked Attorney General Michael Mukasey to investigate ACORN.

Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now

Here is the problem. ACORN pays those who work for them and collect voter registration cards $8 dollars an hour. Their goal or quota is 20 sign ups a day, That's 100 a week or 400 a month that one person is encouraged to sign up. A recipe for fraud.

ACORN said it terminates canvassers who forge applications. But their are many problems with unreadable handwriting, missing information, signatures that didn't match those on file, altered dates of birth or Social Security numbers, applications for people already registered to vote and names that appeared repeatedly, often with different addresses.

So what happens with all of these applications? In most states, ACORN must turn in every form that is filled out. "We must turn in every voter registration card by Florida law, even Mickey Mouse.

ACORN's political action committee has endorsed Obama, but the group says its voter registration efforts are nonpartisan. Do you believe this? Madeline Talbott, lead organizer of the feisty ACORN community organization, a group that's a thorn in the side of most elected officials, "Barack has proven himself among our members. He is committed to organizing, to building a democracy. Above all else, he is a good listener, and we accept and respect him as a kindred spirit, a fellow organizer."Obama continues his organizing work largely through classes for future leaders identified by ACORN and the Centers for New Horizons on the south side.

What does Barack Obama teach these future leaders? "The right wing, the Christian right, has done a good job of building these organizations of accountability, much better than the left or progressive forces have. But it's always easier to organize around intolerance, narrow-mindedness, and false nostalgia. And they also have hijacked the higher moral ground with this language of family values and moral responsibility.

Obama should rein in ACORN's efforts in order to fight voter fraud. But Obama told reporters on Tuesday that ACORN was not advising his campaign on voter registration. Obama will do nothing and said, "This is another one of those distractions that get stirred up during the campaign," You decide!
