Iran's President Ahmadinejad.
The United States and Western leaders have been attempting to convince Tehran to stop enriching uranium, which it has continued doing despite sanctions from the UN and the European Union, insisting its nuclear program is purely for civilian energy.
Now the left in this country believes this. They will say, we the United States, has no right to interfere with the business of Iran. They are a sovereign nation, just like the United States, and we don't what anyone to tell us how to live.
Is the United States like Iran? On July 8th, 2008 Iran state media said nine missiles had been fired in total, including a new Shahab-3, with a range of 2,000km (1,240 miles) capable of reaching Tel Aviv. An adviser to Iran's supreme leader said it would retaliate against any military attack by hitting the Israeli city of Tel Aviv. With a nuclear weapon?
Describing Iran as a "great threat", the Democratic challenger, Barack Obama, called for tougher sanctions while his Republican rival, John McCain, said the test demonstrated the need for effective missile defense. Barack Obama wants tougher sanctions which are not working and John McCain wants to set up a missile defense.
Will Israel attack Iran. Yes, if they could but can't. Israel ask for bunker-buster GBU-28 bombs in 2005. The US said no. Israel asked for Air-space authorization: An attack on Iran would apparently require passage through Iraqi air space. The US said no. Israel ask for refueling planes. An air attack on Iran would require refueling of fighter jets on the way back. The US said no.
The Americans made clear to the Israelis that for now they are sticking to the diplomatic option to halt the Iranian nuclear project and that Jerusalem does not have a green light from Washington for an attack on Iran.
Speaking on a visit to Malaysia on Tuesday, Mr Ahmadineja dismissed the possibility of an attack by the US or Israel as a "joke."
